Anthony E. Rothert, JD, MSW

Anthony Rothert, named Legal Director for the American Civil Liberties
Union of Eastern Missouri in 2006, is an active litigator. His previous
experience includes six years as staff attorney with the Illinois
Guardianship and Advocacy Commission, Legal Advocacy Service in Alton,
Illinois.
Mr. Rothert began his career of advocacy in 1996 after receiving both
his Master of Social Work and his Juris Doctorate from St. Louis
University. As a law student he worked with the Madison County State’s
Attorney’s Office in Edwardsville, Illinois, representing custodial
parents and the Illinois Department of Public Aid in paternity and child
support enforcement actions. He remained with that office until 1999
when he became a Project Outreach Attorney for the Land of Lincoln Legal
Assistance Foundation prior to joining the IGAC.
His published articles include Guardianship: When Wards Leave the
State and Involuntary Administration of Psychotropic Drugs in Illinois:
Balancing Safety and Civil Liberties. In addition he has taught
courses at Sanford Brown College in St. Louis, Missouri at the bachelor
and associate degree levels.
He has been admitted to practice by the Bar Associations of the states
of Missouri and Illinois, the Supreme Court of the United States,
District Court for Southern District of Illinois, and Federal Circuit
Court Eighth Circuit Western District of Missouri and Eastern District
of Missouri.
As a member of the Illinois Bar Association he currently serves on the
committees on Human Rights, Mental Health Law, and Sexual Orientation
and Gender Identity. He has also been a member of their committees on
Law-Related Education for the Public and Supreme Court Rules.
Mr. Rothert is on the Board of Directors of the Illinois Guardianship
Association and the Community Alternatives of St. Louis, Missouri. He
has also served as a board member and officer for the Phoenix Crisis
Center, Inc., Granite City, Illinois.
