Michael T. Brody

Michael T. Brody is a partner in Jenner & Block’s Litigation Department. He is a Co-Chair of the Class Action Practice, and a member of the Complex Commercial Litigation and the Media and First Amendment Practices. Mr. Brody is the Editor of the Firm's Class Action Litigation Update online resource center, which provides regular reports on this legal issue. Mr. Brody is AV Peer Review Rated, Martindale-Hubbell’s highest peer recognition for ethical standards and legal ability.

Mr. Brody has defended a variety of clients in class actions. Mr. Brody has defended securities fraud class actions, consumer class actions, and class actions alleging violations of contract, consumer fraud statutes, fiduciary duties, and banking rules and regulations. In addition to his representation of clients in class actions, Mr. Brody is a lecturer in law at the University of Chicago Law School, where he has taught a seminar course on class action practice.

Mr. Brody has argued more than a dozen appeals in the Seventh Circuit, the Illinois Appellate Court, and the Illinois Supreme Court. He also has assisted in, or supervised, the briefing of numerous other appeals in those courts and on other federal and state appellate courts, including the US Supreme Court.

Throughout his career, Mr. Brody has represented clients pro bono in trial court proceedings, in administrative proceedings, and on appeal. Among other areas of practice, he has handled criminal, immigration, civil rights, election, and family defense matters.

Mr. Brody joined Jenner & Block in October 1984 after completing a clerkship with the Honorable Antonin Scalia, then a Judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Mr. Brody received a Bachelors of Science degree, with distinction and Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1980, and received a Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from the University of Chicago in 1983, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif. While at the University of Chicago Law School, he was a member of the Law Review and served as a member of its editorial board as a Comment Editor. Mr. Brody is a member of the bar of the Supreme Court of Illinois, the Seventh and District of Columbia Circuits, and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
