NGA’s education committee is proud to announce a new series of webinars, geared toward people who are new to the field of guardianship. The Fundamentals webinar debuts in April with four one-hour sessions. Each of the sessions is taught by approved educators and is a basic course for people who want to learn the fundamentals of good guardianship.

All of the one-hour sessions begin at 1:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time (Noon, Central; 11:00 am, Mountain, and 10:00 am, Pacific).

Module One: Basics
Wednesday, April 4– 1:00 to 2:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time

The Basics module focuses on preliminary guardianship information, decisional capacity, incapacity, types of guardianships and guardianship process.

Module Two: Guardian of the Person
Wednesday, April 11 – 1:00 to 2:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time

This module identifies the phases of guardianship, lists the initial duties of the guardian, describes the ongoing duties of the guardian, explains the importance of confidentiality and discusses guardianship transition.

Module Three: Guardian of the Estate
Wednesday, April 18 – 1:00 to 2:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time

This module explains fundamental fiduciary principles, lists and explains the responsibilities and duties of the guardian of the estate, defines prudent investment principles and describes the possible indicators of exploitation. In addition, it will detail conflicts of interest and the termination of guardianship.

Module Four: Rights and Alternatives
Wednesday, April 25 – 1:00 to 2:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time

This module discusses the rights of wards, the importance of protecting and advocating for the wards’ rights, alternatives to guardianship and when they should and should not be used and alternative ways to handle issues related to finances or health.
